A tourist in Detroit: Motown, coney dogs and art

General December 18, 2014

This Dec. 2, 2014 photo shows the exterior of the Motown Museum in Detroit. The museum is located on the site of the recording studio that Berry Gordy founded in 1959, creating the Motown hit machine that produced Diana Ross and the Supremes, The Temptations, Michael Jackson and many other superstars. The museum is filled with artifacts from original furniture to gold records, and visitors get to see the recording studio _ small and simple by today’s standards _ where many of the hits were recorded. (AP Photo/Beth J. Harpaz)DETROIT (AP) — I arrived in a power outage, got a $45 parking ticket and drove past dozens of abandoned homes. But as a tourist on my first trip to Detroit, I also sang in the Motown studio, saw the paintings that were nearly sold to pay the city's bills, and bumped fists with the sculpture of boxer Joe Louis' powerful arm.
